Today was a day of laughter, hula hoops, bubbles, smiles, dogs and hot dogs, lots of water, popcorn, cupcakes and CHILI – all part of the annual Chili Cook-Off in Forest Falls, CA – a yearly event where chili is the star. For those who may not know, chili-con-carne, is a stew like dish made from meat, beans, chili peppers, tomatoes, beans and spices. Todays event honored the volunteer fire department in Forest Falls – a small town numbering around 1000 people (a number that shrinks by at least half during the snowy winter months).
Around ten a.m. a steady stream of cars moved in low-gear up the one and only main road. Carloads of people arrived for the busiest day of the year to enjoy the festivities at this quiet tucked-away town in the San Bernardino mountains. By 11 a.m people were ambling around the street, chatting and chowing down on chili!
Anyone with a ticket could sample the chili offerings under tents that lined the main road – about ten different recipes served from big pots were there for the tasting.
And to sparkle up the event and block traffic in both directions, a parade, consisting of a fire truck followed by kids and dogs made its way to down the main road to rousing cheers. After that, the morning continued with a hula hoop contest, a bubble gum blowing contest followed by a water balloon contest and a hose down by a fireman.
