Cookin’ Chili at Forest Falls

Today was a day of laughter, hula hoops, bubbles, smiles, dogs and hot dogs, lots of water, popcorn, cupcakes and CHILI – all part of the annual Chili Cook-Off in Forest Falls, CA – a yearly event where chili is the star. For those who may not know, chili-con-carne, is a stew like dish made from meat, beans, chili peppers, tomatoes, beans and spices.  Todays event honored the volunteer fire department in Forest Falls – a small town numbering around 1000 people (a number that shrinks by at least half during the snowy winter months).

Around ten a.m. a steady stream of cars moved in low-gear up the one and only main road. Carloads of people arrived for the busiest day of the year to enjoy the festivities at this quiet tucked-away town in the San Bernardino mountains.  By 11 a.m people were ambling around the street, chatting and chowing down on chili!

Anyone with a ticket could sample the chili offerings under tents that lined the main road –  about ten different recipes served from big pots were there for the tasting.

And to sparkle up the event and block traffic in both directions, a parade, consisting of a fire truck followed by kids and dogs made its way to down the main road to rousing cheers. After that, the morning continued with a hula hoop contest, a bubble gum blowing contest followed by a water balloon contest and a hose down by a fireman.

So please enjoy the slide show below!

Thanks Theresa! Yes, it was lovely to see all the smiling faces, hear the laughter, observe the children’s innocence and grown-ups at play!

Where is Forest Falls? I’m getting it confused with Forest Meadows outside of Auburn. Thanks, Alia

HI Alia, Forest Falls is in the mountains of southern California, below Big Bear. My partners family has had a cabin here since the 40’s.

Somehow I thought it was in southern California. And there aren’t too many places in the mountains there, except for around Big Bear. Thanks for the geography lesson, Alia
